Vesuvius is now a National Park. Although you can no longer climb part way down the crater the views from the top are incredible and worth the hike and small entrance fee at the top to actually view the crater and walk around its rim.
It has been interesting comparing old and new photos from our two visits 18 years apart and seeing the changes. Look out for some very young Smiths on this page ;-)
- Pros:wonderful views and seeing the crater
- Cons:entrance fee now
- In a nutshell:you can't go to Pompei without coming here too

Fantastic place!...we enjoyed visiting Vesuvius too
Great page Sandy! I only managed to see the Vesuvius from a long distance, I would have loved to go up though! Great to see that old picture of yours :-))
Great page. Just finished reading a book called Pompeii, It is a fictional account of the events leading up to and including the now infamous eruption in August, 79 A.D.
My daughter thanks you for your informative page which helped her with her Vesuvius project in school! :-)
The old path is the one I remember! It's a sign of age when you start looking back and comparing!!! ;)
Interesting page! Great pics and useful info. Have to visit sometimes...
Excellent info and pics!! Lucky you to have had the chance to climb down the crater....
For six euros, maybe they should provide a cable car up...lol
Great page and very interesting comparison after 18 years! I didn't buy a walking pole there and it was forbidden to climb down the crater in 1994 as well. Keep up the best work on VT, please!
Excellant presentation..beautiful phtographs..nice tips and useful information..Highly useful to a traveller..
