Our 24th wedding anniversary saw us flying off to Sicily , heading to Taormina for 5 nights...and what a view as we headed into Catania airport. There was Mount Etna glistening in the late afternoon sun with her winter snow coat and not a cloud in sight. A perfect way to start our trip to Taormina. We enjoyed more magical views of Etna from Taormina, especially from the Greek theatre - there's no escaping its presence.
Mon. night arrival
Tues - explore Taormina theatre and town in the morning. Afternoon cable-car down to Taormina Mare and Isola Bella
Wed. 9.45am bus to Castemola walk back down via mountain track and over to Madonna della Rocca - stages of cross path down to Taormina
Thurs Etna Round trip - takes in Alcantra Gorge, Radazzo and road up to Etna.
Fri - local bus to Messina - long way out via coastal towns and short way back on the autostrada. Stop in Giardini Naxos on the way back.
Sat. - bus to Catania - city sightseeing tour with little train and then on foot. Overnight in hotel
Sun. stroll to local markets and to take in Marathon events before heading to airport
- Pros:God time to vist Taormina
- Cons:coastal areas virtually closed in low season

We loved Sicily, didn't stay in Taormina but visited on a very crowded day in June. A cinema screen blocked the view from the theatre but that from the terrace of the Wunderbar was stunning. Would love to return at a quieter time as you did.
