  • Fondest Memory: Exploring the oh so many Campos - this one is Campo della Maddalena in Cannaregio. This raised square is unchanged since medieval times and has often been used as a film set. I loved the chimneys here - all different styles and sizes.

  • Fondest Memory: Campo Santa Margherita - pretty campo in Dorsoduro area, just a few minutes walk from the Al Sole hotel. This square was enlarged back in the 1800's by filling in the canals at its southern end. Many cafes and bars here and its a pleasant spot for a chat and people watching. It becomes even more lively at night, staying open later than most other places in Venice and seeing as the water buses operate late into the night its easy to get back to base. Just a short walk from Accademia.

  • Favorite Thing: The architecture all around Venice is so amazing. This beautiful palace, found in the Campo Santa Margherita, is virtually unchanged since the 1300's. Notice its deep overhanging eaves and the family crest over the entrance portal.

  • Fondest Memory: Grand canal View: every building an architectural gem. The number 1 vaporetto goes the slow route through the Grand Canal from Piazzale Roma (worthwhile getting on here for a front stage view) to the Lido.

  • Fondest Memory: The Ornate Palaces on the Grand Canal are beautiful. There are so many of them - each beautiful in their own way. its worth taking a vaporetto ride several times past them as you keep noticing different architectural styles and details. Best viewd in the late afternoon sun when they take on a glorious colour - please see other pics by clicking the link below.

Churches: Venetian Churches -Santa Maria della Salute
  • Tip Rating:

  • Fondest Memory: There are so many Venetian Churches to explore - this one is the baroque church of Santa Maria della Salute in Dorsoduro and is a famous landmark of Venice. Admission to this one is free - many charge an entrance fee for but a 3 day pass for 6 churches of your choice is availbale. Its almost too big a church to get a decent photo - this first pic is taken as you pass under the Accademia bridge - love those colourful poles too! Have a good walk around it and see it from all the angles. Please see the other pics as this is such a beautiful church and has so much detail on it - I could stand for ages looking up at it, taking in all the detail - and right at the top you can see a figure on a ball.

This church is a Votive temple built following a decree by the Senate of the Republic during the plague of 1630. Its festival takes place each year now on the 21st November when visiting ventians come with lighted candles. A fourth bridge is even errected to make access to the church easier.

Campanile and its Views: Views from Campanile

  • Fondest Memory: I love to see aerial views over the city and one of the best places for this is from atop the campanile in St Marks square. Santa Maria della Salute, one of several plague churches in Venice, dominatings the sothernmost entrance to the Grand Canal was one of my favourite views from up here. Other good viewpoints to take not of are the other campanile - San Giorgio Maggiore, the Scala Contarini de Bovolo and from the top floor of the Naval Museum near Arsnale in Castello.

  • Fondest Memory: Drinking in all the wonderful architecture everywhere - this is part of St Marks the main church in Venice and a must see of course.
The different colours in the marble, the views of the domes and intricate details were mesmerising. You could spend hours just here!

  • Fondest Memory: Just throw away the map and get lost exploring down these side canals - its so much more interesting to discover quaint little bridges and canals that way! This is one of many such views.

  • Favorite Thing: Stroll along the Fondamente della Missericordia and degli Ormesini. It is behind, running parallel, to the Strada Nova but is worlds away from the tourist hustle and bustle - great place for a quiet stroll and to explore other little campo and calles off it. It has more of a local neighbourhod feel in this area and I wish we hadn't left it to the last day to discover it. There are many wine bars here alongside mexican and middle eastern restaurants - fairly popular in the evening I would image too.
