Although I enjoyed Greppia restaurant and its delicious pumpkin ravioli, on my latest visit to Verona I was happy to leave the choice to Effeti our local VT residen expert. Da Ungo was also the choice for Ma and Pa Kettle to savour - and having been can understand why! Lovely ambience in a local osteria - the best kind of eaterie for delicious home cooked food. No set menu - just ask the waiter whats on offer - glad to have a translator with me!
Favorite Dish: Pasta with duck and trufles, Liver with Polenta or Beef in red wine any anything from the sweet trolley it all looked delicious but I chosse pear in chocholate sauce and Francesco let me try his grappa flavoured cookie dessert.
For 3 course with bottle of good red wine cost is about 30-40 euros. Quite good I think for a city restaurant and really delicious food..oh and lovely compnay made it a very enjoyable evening :-))

inner courtyard
Just adjacent to the Duomo is the cafe bar - looks unassuming from the exterior but enter and at the back is a shady courtyard - handy to escape the heat and enjoy a drink.
We just had a coffee (fnacily decorated with the cream!) and rested our feet for a short while.
Directions: just by the cathedral

mixed meats!
Favorite Dish: 'bollito misto' is a veronese speciality and athough the waiter expressed concern that this was a winter dish not really suitable for a hot summer's evening I had to try it having read so much about it. Its probably their equivalent of a Sunday lunch being a full platter of boiled meats. Definitely not for the vegetarian the meats include - a hunk of ham, a slab of beef, followed by a whole veal tongue, a rich fatty cotechino sausage, and a wobbly roll of testina (pig’s head)! (main pic)
As if the meats and a mixed salad where not enough they come served with various sauces - coarse rock salt, mostarda di frutta (mustard-glazed fruits), fiery horse radish, lush green salsa verde.(pic 2) One more sauce is included with the Bollito Misto - a large bowl of what looks like runny oatmeal. This is “peara” the classic Veronese sauce of bone marrow, beef stock, Parmigiano and breadcrumbs, flavoured with peppercorns. Well I needed another table for all this!!! (pic 3)

Greppia
This was our favourite restaurant in Verona. A lovely informal, friendly atmosphere, not too large a place so you did not feel part of a large touristic crowd. The cusine was varied and tasty and typical Veronese dishes can be enjoyed here such as polenta.
Favorite Dish: The first pasta dish here I enjoyed was a tasty ravioli with pumpkin - something quite different I'm sure my vegetarian friends would enjoy ;-) There is an extensive wine list too.
Their speciality however is "Bollito Misto"....more of that in the next few tips!

ice-cream time
The cafes in Piazza Erbe are a pleasant place to sit, watch the world go by and have a gelato...or three ;-) Well my friend Gill, myself and Chiara (Pollon) certainly did!
Favorite Dish: Gelato, gelato, gelato!
Comparison: more expensive than average
Directions: Piazza Erbe right in the historical centre
Price: less than US$10

Osteria al Duca
Another restaurant or more acurately an "osteria" (tavena or inn) we enjoyed was Osteria al Duca. Even if it looks busy go in as they have more rooms upstairs and its really quaint and atmospheric.
Favorite Dish: Two courses with choices of local dishes were available for 13 euros - so it was a popular place. We had paparadelle (wide pasta ribbons) with duck sauce followed by a plate of polenta with gorgonzola cheese, mushrooms and salami on top - quite tasty.
Other dishes inclued a lot of horse or donkey dishes - again not one for the vegetarians!
Good selection of deserts am an extensive wine list too. A three course meal here with wine cost 20 euros - so very reasonable and an enjoyable evening.
