"Aachen - City of Coronations and Cakes!" Aachen by sandysmith

Aachen Travel Guide: 809 reviews and 2,501 photos

Aachen was the setting for a VT meeting in September 2004.
Many thanks to Sabsi for an open invitation to join her here and for meeting
us at the airport and accomodating us in her Dusseldorf apartment -
when we eventually got there!

Aachen was once the seat of Charlesmagne and the Holy Roman Empire that greatly changed the face of Christianity in Europe.
The main sights centre around the cathedral and the Town Hall but I also enjoyed the sculptures which are a more recent addition to the town centre.

Amongst all the sightseeing and chatting a lot of eating went on - especially cakes. The sweet gingerbread or Printen is a local speciality.

Hi Sandy, enjoyed your tips. Will be in Brussels first week Sept'08, looks like a day trip to Aachen is on the agenda. Do you have other suggestions?

Wow, what a beautiful city full of charming fountains, beautiful old buildings and sculptures. Hmm... to be trapped on a freeway for so long time sounds bad but at least you had great company in your car :-).

Looks like a great day in a city full of fountains & sculptures. You must have been so glad to get home after that long ordeal on the autobahn!

Great page, Sandy. It was nice meeting you. Looking out for a next time. I was just ahead of the accident on the A44, but we were rerouted at the A31 lateron, due to a crashed truck! PJ
