  • The Salzbergweg is very famous - the source of the town's prosperity since early 16th century. A visit to the salt mines is a unique fun as well as educational experience, don't miss it!

You need to allow two hours for the tour which includes clothes changing time.
Its much cooler down in the mines so bring some warm clothes and good shoes.

Things To Do: Dressed for the Ocassion
  • Tip Rating:
  • When you visit the salt mines they will dress you in the old miners traditional costumes - important for later on. A little train then takes you on the tour into the mines....

  • Not only to you get a ride on a train but also a funicular, a raft across the salt lake and a great slide. This is where the rubber mats tied around your waist in your miners outfit come in handy - sit on these and you wizz down the slide without burning your bum!

Things To Do: Fjord in the Bavarian alps.
  • Tip Rating:
  • The lovely village of Shonau am Konigssee is just 3 miles away (bus 9541 takes you there). Take a day boat ticket for the lake -Konigssee - and hop on and off at your leisure admiring the emerald green of the water and the stunning scenery all around -the Watzmann East Face almost reaches a staggering 1800 m.
Another beautiful lake - Obersee - is waiting to be explored at the far end of Konigssee, encompassed by mountains - this was separated from Konigssee by a landslide.
You need to make a 15 min walk from the landing stage of Salet-Obersee to see the scenery here in its full splendour - including a waterfall.

    Things To Do: St Bartholoma
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is a lovely red onion-domed pilgrim church on the Konigssee. The boat trip to St. Bartholomä takes about 1 hour 15 mins. - its a very scenic area lying at the foot of the majestic Watzmann. Here too is the former royal hunting lodge, now a restaurant so its a good place to have a snack or a meal.

Wish we had more time here as its great for walks starting from here to appreciate more the beauty of nature in this area. The trip from Königssee over St. Bartholomä to Salet and back lasts about 1 hour 45 mins.

Things To Do: Mount Jenner - 100 Peak View
  • Tip Rating:
  • To view the konigsee from above then take the jennerbahn (gondola) which in 30 mins brings you to the summit of the Jenner at 1874m with its view of over a hundred german and austrian peaks- if its not too hazy!

There are signposted trails here for all levels of ability - really must go back here some day and discover more of this.

Things To Do: Jenner View of Hitler's Tea House
  • Tip Rating:
  • From the top of the Jenner you should be able to make out Hitler's old tea house, or Hitler's Eagles Nest as it is known, atop the Kehlstein mountain. This is the subject of another days outing from Berchtesgarden.

Things To Do: The Kehlstein Haus - Hitler's Eagles Nest
  • Tip Rating:
  • This tea house with its wonderful view was built by Martin Bormann as a present from the Nazist Party to Adolf Hitler. However Hitler preferred another house and actually only visited this place about 16 times. Still the views here were more interesting than anything else and the house also incorporates a restaurant.

To reach this place you need to take the 9549 bus to Hintereck from where special buses only (no cars allowed) then take you up an amazing winding road. You then enter a tunnel and take the old brass lift up to the top.

For those who want to hike you can do so from from Ofneralm up to the Eagle’s Nest parking area (approx. 1½ to 2 hours)

Or hike from Scharitzkehl parking area to the Eagle’s Nest parking area on a trail that offers beautiful panoramic views. (approx. 2 ½ to 3 hours)

Note the Eagles Nest is only open in the summer months - so check the website for uptodate start of the season.

Things To Do: Obersalzberg - Hitlers Bunker
  • Tip Rating:
  • Berchtesgaden - going into the bunkers
  • going into the bunkers
  • by sandysmith

  • A unique if somewhat eerie experience is to vist the old ww2 bunkers in this area - Hitler had these bunkers and air-raid shelter built in 1943. The bunker systems consisted of multi-level tunnels lined with concrete and bricks, with associated power, heating, and ventilation systems, and anti-gas protection systems. They are accessible from the guest hotel - Haus Turken in Obersalzberg.
There are others in the area but these are the most interesting. Today many are being put to better use by being converted to disco halls or music studios!

Since our vist a new Documentation Centre has also opened in 1999 that details the National Socialist era.
