Split - Diocletian's city

by BlueLlama - last update: May 4, 2008

View from the Marjan Peninsula
I went to Split for three days in late April - turns out to be a good time to visit, with warm weather and not too many visitors. Not so good was that I realised too late that three days really doesn't do the city and surroundings justice. There are far too many places to see and savour. Well, I suppose that leaves plenty for a return trip...

What I did do was spend a good amount of time in Diocletian's Palace, and it certainly deserves not to be rushed. Quite unlike anywhere I'd been before and the sights within its walls that require tickets are the very least of what make it so intriguing. Best visited at different times of the day to get an idea of how it continues to be a living place.

The old city and Marjan Peninsula were also superb, and these are the places I'd like to explore in greater depth one day. The Peninsula is a paradise for walkers and offers brilliant views of the city below.

Some impressions of the city

I also managed to get to the island of Hvar for a day, which was a nice amount for seeing Stari Grad and Hvar Town, although I would love to return for a relaxed week doing nothing there. Trogir too - very easy to get to by bus, although it can be hard to track down the right info! Have a look at my transporation tip.

Pros:"Riva, port and palace all fascinating, too many daytrip destinations to choose from..."
Cons:"Lack of information for visitors, monotonous food (I think the interesting restaurants are out there but well hidden)"
In A Nutshell:"Superb architecture and surroundings - worth savouring"
