Pakistan is the sixth most populous country in the world and is the second most populous country with a Muslim majority. Its territory was a part of the pre-partitioned British India and has a long history of settlement and civilisation including the Indus Valley Civilisation. Most of it was conquered in the 1st millennium BCE by Persians and Greeks. Later arrivals include the Arabs, Afghans, Turks, Baloch and Mongols. The territory was incorporated into the British Raj in the nineteenth century. Since its independence, the country has experienced both periods of significant military and economic growth, and periods of instability, with the secession of East Pakistan (present-day Bangladesh).
Pakistan has variety of mountains, glaciers, peaks and passes which is an exception in whole of the world. K 2 at 8611 meters, Nanga Parbat at 8126 m, Gasherbrum-I at 8068 m, Broad Peak at 8047 meters and Gasherbrum-II 8035 meters high. There are 42 other peaks which are higher than all the highest peaks of the other continents. In addition to that, there are 160 peaks over 7,000 meters and 700 others over 6,000 meters. The Northern Pakistan is also home to some of the longest glaciers outside Polar region; Siachen (72 kilometers), Hispar (61 kilometers), Biafo (60 kilometers), Baltoro (60 kilometers) and Batura (64 kilometers). Besides the high mountains, Northern Areas' longest glaciers including the Godwin Austin, Abruzzin and Baltoro which meet at Concordia forms the largest glacial lake at a height of 4720 meters.
The beautiful valleys of Hunza, Shigar, Khaplu, Ishkuman, Naltar, Gilgit, Skardu, Chitral, Kalash and the glacial lakes like Kachura, Satpara,Lalusar, and Saiful Muluk are all found in the mountains of Northern Areas. The tourists, trekkers, and mountaineers from all around the world all wish to make adventures in these mountains.
Pakistan has four seasons: winter (December to March), Spring (April to June), Summer (June to September) and the monsoon season (July to September). The north has freezing winters with high levels of snowfall and fairly pleasant summers. In the south, summers (March to October) are hot. In winter, November to March, Southern Pakistan ( Sind, Baluchistan, Punjab and southern NWFP) is best visited because temperature is pleasantly cooler. In summer temperature is extremely hot in most parts of southern plain of Pakistan and traveling around is hard work. While Northern Pakistan ( Northern Area, Northern NWFP, Kashmir and northern Part of Punjab is best visited in summer( April to October). During winter mountainous North is mostly snow bound and accessibility is not easy.
Trekking season in Northern Areas and NWFP is June to September.
