Miyajima means shrine island and it mainly refers to Itsukushima Shrine which is famous for its floating torii gate. The shrine and its torii gate are unique for being built over water, seemingly floating in the sea during high tide. The admission fee is 300 JPY. It is open daily from 6:30 to 17:30. Besides Itsukushima Shrine, you can also visit Daisho-in Temple which belongs to Shingon Buddhism, Kiyomori Shrine, Daiganji Temple, Tahoto Pagoda and Five Storeyed Pagoda. Just like Nara, you will see many deers wandering around the island. You can also reach to the top of Mount Misen by using walking courses around parks or by using Miyajima Ropeway. Miyajima is easy to reach from Hiroshima and a full day can be spent visiting the shrines and enjoying eating the famous okonomiyaki before leaving the island. To reach Miyajima, you can take train of JR Sanyo Line from JR Hiroshima Station to Miyajimaguchi Station (25 minutes, 400 JPY one way, JR Pass covers the trip) or take tram line no 2 (40 minutes, 270 JPY one way). Then you have to take ferry to the island either from JR or Matsudai ferry companies. (10 minutes, 170 JPY one way, JR Pass covers JR ferries)

Hiroshima Castle is five storeys tall and its grounds are surrounded by a moat. There is a shrine on the grounds and a main gate. The castle was built by Mori Terumoto in 1589. It was spared from the destruction that many other castles met during Meiji Restoration and survived into modern era. However it was destroyed by the atomic bomb in 1945. Inside the castle, you can visit a museum on Hiroshima's history. The admission fee is 360 JPY. It is open daily between 9:00 to 18:00.

Before the bomb, the area of Peace Park was the political and commercial heart of the city. For this very reason, it was chosen as the target. Four years after the bomb was dropped, it was decided to devote this area to peace memorial facilities. Peace Memorial Museum is the main facility. It consists of two buildings and its main focus is on the events of August 6, the dropping of the bomb and its outcome in human suffering. It is heartbreaking, but it must be visited to understand the terrible effects of nuclear power and the importance of peace. A-Bomb Dome is what remains of the Prefectural Industrial Promotion Hall. When the bomb exploded, it was one of the few buildings to remain. Between the museum and A-Bomb Dome is the Cenotaph for the victims estimated to be 220000 in number. Every year on the anniversary of the bomb, a ceremony is held at the park, a moment of silence is observed at 8:15 am, the precise time of detonation. The admission fee to museum is 50 JPY and it is open between 8:30 and 18:00 daily.
