In ancient times during the days of the Mahabharata king Pandu use to rule Indraprastha. He had five sons and his second son Bhima ,who was an expert in the use of the mace(gadha)was travelling through the hills of Uttarakhand along with his wife Draupati.it so occured that at this particular place (presently Bhimtal),Draupati felt very thirsty and quench her thirst Bhim hit his (Gadha)mace on the ground very hard ,which resulted in water flow from the ground and thus the formation of Bhimtal took place, and suitably the name Bhimtal also took form. There is a small island in the middle of Bhimtal which is currently an aquarium. This is beleived to be the spot on which Bhim hit with mace (Gadha).During this travel of the Pandavas they are also supposed to have setup a "Shivlinga" along side the lake, which is presently known as the temple of Bhimeswor Mahadev and is visited by people far and near. |
