Sarnano

Sarnano is a historic medieval hilltop town, with a terme or Spa and a ski resort, it's located on the edge of the wonderful Sibillini Mountains National Park and boasts great eating, drinking walking and cycling in awesome scenery.

The Spa or “Terme” : The waters; which are bottled locally, are claimed to be beneficial for many complaints and the Spa or “Terme” itself offers visitors health and beauty treatments in lovely surroundings at a reasonable cost. Take the right turning for Gualdo 200m before the town, the Terme is about 1km on the right.

The Childrens Park, Crazy golf & Tennis court
At the main Piazza turn left towards Sassotetto, after 150m, opposite the parade of shops you will find the park and crazy golf on the left (down the hill). If you wish to play tennis, then please call 0733657092

The History: Prior to medieval times Sarnano was occupied by the Longobards, however in the XIIIth century Sarnano became temporarily free until Varano from nearby Camerino conquered it. The Papal State and its armies then governed the province until in 1860 Le Marche joined a united Italy.

Tourist Office: Its location alternates between an office 100m above the Piazza on the left of the main road towards Macerata or in the vaulted arched building on the left just before the arch into the Centro Storico. It has all the literature and information that you will ever need.

Shopping: There are a number of specialist shops in Sarnano, including 3 Enotheche or delis where you can buy local foods and wines, 7 butchers (most of which stock only local meat where the provenance is known) and the stall in the square; which Fabrizio runs and sells his own great Porchetta (suckling pig stuffed with garlic and wild fennel), stuffed turkey roll or stuffed rabbit roll, crudo ham and a variety of other salamis. For supermarkets, there are two in town near the Park (left at the top of the main Piazza) with deli counters, and for staples, beer and pasta, the prices for basics are far better at Eurospin which is out of Sarnano towards Macerata 300m on the left. All the supermarkets are open 8.30am-12.30/1pm and 5pm-7.30/8pm Mon – Sun (closed Thurs and Sun pm)

Speciality shops in and around Sarnano

Around Sarnano there are shops that specialize in different things one for each need; There is Smoll for your toiletries and make-up, this is next to Pizzeria/Bar da Marino above the piazza. For food there are loads of small delis which sell cheeses, salamis, local specialities, wines, milk and juices etc. There are 3 bakers, one near the restaurant Ai Pini, , one up from that one on your right on the main road and another in the arches below the Centro Storico and Piazza Perfetti. .
In the bars you can find some pretty good ice-cream , but if you want more choice and flavour you should go to the icecream shop off the high street on the left just before the arch into the centro storico it also does frappes: a milkshake made from icecream and milk, and does frozen yoghurts and slushpuppys. Bar Centrale in the main Piazza also make their own Ice Creams.Opposite the icecream, shop(down to the left) there’s a fish mongers open on Friday mornings, there’s also a fishmonger in the main square on Friday morning.
You can also buy wonderful Fried Fish amongst other delicacies at the market on Thursday.
On the high street there is also a chocolate shop with marche chocolate which mainly have liquour, or try the Italian make Cafarel which Grace says is very nice; they also do fresh coffee beans, liquors and if you are after a better quality Marche wine then this is the place.
A new deli cum sandwich bar “la Golosa” has opened in Piazza Perfetti, you can taste morsels of local specialities or stay a bit longer for a proper repast.
Finally, there are 2 Pasta Fresca Shops (closed Mondays), with Fresh egg pastas, stuffed pastas, pre cooked meals and more, one is at the top left of the main piazza, the other above Di per Di supermarket opposite the park. Try the local speciality Capelletti.
