Limnos Island

Our first visit to the Island of Limnos was in late September 2000 when the weather was particularly windy and chilly and our apartment was not one we would ever wish to return to.
However the beautiful harbour, and lengthy sandy beach at Rhia Nera, meaning shallow waters, led us to consider returning.

Getting to Limnos Island

Towards the end of August 2008 we booked two weeks at the Sotiris Studios in Myrina through Greek Sun. The studio was only three minutes from the shallow beach, and only five minutes to the local supermarket. The studio was spotlessly clean and spacious with fruit trees drooping under the weight of all the ripe peaches below our balcony.
Due to our Thomas Cook flight being cancelled, we arrived at Gatwick to discover we had been put on a Thomsonfly flight leaving only about an hour later than originally planned. We left England on one of the grottiest mornings this year and several hours later got off the plane to a clear blue sky. Our transfer to Myrina was by taxi, sharing with another couple who were to be our neighbours for the next two weeks. Things obviously worked out well since we have e-mailed each other on return from holiday.
Although a second block is being built alongside the Sotiris Apartments and Studios, the noisy work is to be carried out during the winter months - and caused us no problems whatsoever.

First impressions

Once unpacked, we headed down to the beach where we savoured our first pint of Mythos, in a chilled glass in what had been a tumble down bar and restaurant that had always run out of food on our last visit. What a transformation - white sofas with drapes on the beach! Free sunbeds and umbrellas were available all the way along Rhia Nera - although the numbers were reduced significantly as the holiday went on due to the lack of occupants. This was in no way such bad thing since we find row upon row of beach beds off-putting.
