The Megalopolis. | Mexico City, the Megalopolis |
This expansive city is built on the ruins of Mexico-Tenochtitlan in 1325, once the ancient capital and the center of the Aztec civilization.
The City was founded on the beds of several lakes, where today inhabitants live in a constant movement, vehicles in perpetual motion, hordes of pedestrians, colorful markets emerge from the gray urban backdrop, and ethereal monuments and stately mansions loom above street corner taco stands and dirty streets, smell of spiced food and the sounds of the mariachis. This scenario plays host to the poverty of many of its inhabitants, but also to the luxury and refinement of few others.
Continuously inhabited for 680 years is today, with more than 22 million inhabitants (22,350,000)* the 2nd one of the principal agglomerations around the world and with more than 8 million inhabitants (8,700,000)* ocupies 12th place for most popuolus cities on Earth, covering the flat Valle de México (Valley of Mexico) surrounded by mountains.
Unfortunately, the single most widely known facts about Mexico City are that its air is severely polluted and crime is high. That is true!
That said, travellers will still find a pleasant sites, enjoyable places and a historic city lying beneath the surface.
Welcome to Mexico City, the real city through my pages and remember my travel moto: "best part of travel is when you discover what you are looking for..."
