Big City but it shrinks down fast! I first arrived in Nagoya in the summer of 2001. I thought it was a huge city (currently rated either the 3rd or 4th largest city in Japan based on which poll you look at) and it was compared to my hometown of Oklahoma City, OK. I was a bit daunted by having to use the subways and trains as we do not have them in OKC but once I found the local train stn and subway I was releived to see they had excellent signage in English and good maps. After a few months of getting used to the city I noticed that the city was not as big as what I thought at first and the city shrunk down really quick. I found myself hanging around the major centers of Nagoya which are Sakae, Fushimi, and Meieki. There are other places which are pulling more and more people away for shopping and nightlife such as Kanayama, Fujigaoka and Imaiake but they are just not the same yet (but will be soon!!) |
Places to visit with family and friends Nagoya Castle- Give yourself about 2 hours thats all you will need.
Atsuta Jingu Shrine- Good for an important shrine but not much to it- give yourself about 1 hour.
Shirotori Garden-Great garden near Atsuta Jingu and very pretty in all seasons- Best added to the Atsuta Jingu visit-Give yourself another hour.
Tokugawa Art Muesum and Garden-personaly I have only been to the garden so I cant speak about the muesum. Very pretty in all seasons- Give yourself about an hour for a stroll. Muesum time???
Higashiyama Zoo-Avoid it if you like to see small cramped pens and sad looking animals. Very disgraceful if you ask me and should be updated. |
