This is a day trip out of Ljubljana & I cannot big up this cave system enough. Having already been to Postojna Jame I couldn't see this cave could be better... but I kept my faith in UNESCO and despite my family being desperately "all caved out" I dragged them along..... And my husband (who doesn't say much) said that these caves were one of the best places that I have ever dragged him to!
It is very Lord of The Rings - nothing I can say could possibly describe how spectacular Skocjanske Jame is and certainly no photos could ever capture enough to show you.
The cave is 6200m in length and has a depth of 223m. The Reka river runs through the sytem, shaping it and creating something wonderful. Inside there are rapids, waterfalls, lakes, natural bridges... The largest chamber is Martelova dvorana at 300m in length, 1233m wide & with a height of 146m.
Everywhere advertises the Postojna Jama. We didn't see one snippet of advertising for Skocjanske Jame... and if you can only do one cave expedition.....make it this one - you will not be sorry!
No photography is allowed in the cave... so we turned our flash off and took "snaps" as we went... the pity is that we didn't get the best photos but I hvae uploaded the one I took of the bridge because it was soooo awesome, I simply could not share it (even though it's quality isn't great!). Cerkvenik bridge is 45m above the Reka river which gushing below.
There is a bit of a walk from the visitors centre down to the cave entrance which is through lush green woodland - it's an easy walk. At the end of the cave tour you have to go back up - it's quite steep but it's a good path and the views of the Reka river outside of the cave, amongst the greenery is beautiful. I advocate sensible shoes, a bottle of water and making the most of the toilet facilities before the tour commences (especially if you have children with you... ours LOVED this cave).
Immensum ad antrum aditus! - Enter, traveller, into this immensity! Postojna Cave is a vast cave system. At 20km in length it is one of the largest in the world. You will see 5.7km of the cave, 4km of this will be by cave railway!
The tour starts at the cave railway station. The train takes you through tunnels to the Gothic Hall (richly decorated with stalgmites and stalactites). Onto the Congress Hall and finally to the Great Mountain (Velika Gora). By foot you then follow the passageways, cross the Russian Bridge (built by POW's in 1916) into the 500m long Beautiful Caves (Lepe Jame) where the stalctites and stalagmites are 2 million years old. Onto the Brilliant Passage where "The Brilliant" (natural formation) is found. Next you will go to a pool which contains the "human fish". Lastly you will be led into the Concert Hall (Koncertna Dvorana) - the largest in the system and can accommodate 10,000 people for concerts (which are held here). We happened to be there at the same time as a Barber Shop choir who gave us a performance - wow, the accoustics were amazing. Our children LOVED the Postojna Caves & proteus.
The "human fish" or olm or proteus anguinus is a bit like a salamander. It is the largest (known) permanent cave dwelling vertebrate. About 25 - 30cm in length it has a fin like tail & 4 legs - the front have 3 fingers and the back have 2 toes! The proteus is blind with almost invisible eyes but apparently has a fantastic sense of smell and can detect weak electric fields in the water. It can breathe in and out of the water, it's skin has no pigmentation, they can go for years without eating and do not reach sexual maturiy until 16 or 18!
May to September the tours run hourly and cost 2900/1400 SIT adult/child
The Vivarium - which if you are lucky you'll get to go in and see all the strange, weird and wonderful beasties that live in the caves. Our timing was dreadful, we got there with 1 minute before it closed! I would have loved to have seen it.
Directions: We went by car and there are road signs to point you inthe right direction, also the caves appear on pretty much all maps of Slovenia as a sort of landmark. However, judging by the coaches.... trips should be easy to arrange.
The Numpty Train
Every worthy city has one and with 2 small boys we seem to get roped onto most. You may feel like a bit of a foolish tourist sitting happily on the Numpty Train but in Ljubljana nobody bats an eye so relax and enjoy!
It starts at Presernov Trg, tottles about and goes up to the castle (Ljubljana Grad). You do get to see a lot with minimum effort!
Kids LOVE it.
p.s obviously it's real name is not the Numpty Train!!!!
Directions: Departs from Presernov Trg
