"Keflavik" Keflavík by smirnofforiginal

Being only a few minutes from the airport and as we had an early morning flight I had made the executive decision that staying in Keflavik the night before was a good idea.

What can I say about Keflavik? I always y my hardest to find something nice about a palce. I donl't like to be critical and/or negative... and I can say Keflavik afforded us with a very beautiful sunrise the morning we departed. Other than that, though I am afraid I will have to report that I found Keflavik to be shabby, ugly and depressing. Everywhere looked run down and it was a thoroughly miserable place to stay. I was desperate to find a nice, little oasis in the middle of the run-down town, but I did not. The evening I spent in Keflavik I spent trying to decide whether it would be less depressing to stay in the Chinese cafe with the broken windows, or to finish the meal and return to the grey and uninspiring hotel room in the building that looked like part of a run down council estate...

The receptionist (who was nice) where we stayed explained that there is a lot of unemployment in Keflavik and no money. She told us about people having queued behind the hotel earlier in the day to be given food, by a charity, for Easter.

Perhaps there was a nice slice of Keflavik that we somehow manage to miss - it was bittly cold and wandering the deserted streets being whipped by the harsh, icy winds did not encourage us to tally outdoors for too long!!! With Reykjavik being only 50km away from Keflavik / airport, there really is no need to stay here!
