A fair few countries have had a pop at and invaded Estonia at some point over the course of history and they've all left their mark together with some scars. Shockingly enough Estonia was only handed back to the Estonian's in 1991. Estonia then became the first former Soviet republic to be invited to join the EU. Tallinn is small and compact and as such is easy to navigate on foot. It's set on the Baltic Sea and it's largely down to it's strategic location that it's had it's share of fortunes as well as misfortunes. Tallinn is medieval and beautiful, with rugged city walls and a forest around. It has charm, atmosphere and friendly locals but the food is sh!te and it can be rather ccccold! |
In the winter Tallinn is rather deprived of sunlight. That's not to say there isn't any... but there isn't much and what there is is weak. The darkness is very disorientating in relation to time - it feels really later when it is only about 2 or 3 o'clock in the afternoon! We were there a week before Christmas and it was very very cold but the snow, that had been there until 2 days beforehand, had all gone.... and the Estonian's like their snow because it is bright and adds a cheer in the otherwise dark, gloom of winter. |
