Krung Thep, the capital of Thailand, known to us foreigners as Bangkok, was established by King Rama I in 1782 as the capital of Siam.

Nowdays Bangkok is an enormous metropolis; densely populated - heaving with a population of over 8 million. Crammed with skyscrapers, plush hotels and high tech shopping malls. Swarming with tourists, grid locked with vehicles and choking in fumes and pollution. In fact there is so much traffic, ion an attempt to ease congestion at peak travel times they alternate the direction of the traffic flow from street to street - seriously mad and confusing!

Bangkok is a convenient place to fly in and out of and to hop to and from neighbouring countries (by plane). It's not the sort of city you take a leisurely stroll around but there is a lot going on and some great day trips to be made from here. It is fun for a few days but personally, for me, the fewer the days the better!
