San Gimignano is a medieval town with so much history. It is nestled on top of a hill in Tuscany, Italy and surrounded by fertile agricultural land planted with olives and grapes.
San Gimignano has a history that dates back in the 10th Century.
This town was well known in the Middle Ages to be the "stop over" for Catholic pilgrims going to Rome and the Vatican.
The buildings here have survived many catastrophes. They were well built brick buildings. The architecture today, should learn from how these structures were built as they withstand the test of time and nature.
In the Middle Ages, the center of the town is used for execution and used for punishing criminals. People congregate here to watch criminals punished by hanging.
The structure in the middle of the town that looked like a well to me, at a first glance,was actually used for execution!
There are a few streets in the town with many tiny stores selling arts and crafts, souvenirs, Italian purses and bags, Murano jewelries, etc.
- Pros:Historical place to see, great architecture study site...
- Cons:This is a one-time visit for me because it reminded me of the harsh medieval past.
