We spent nearly a week travling Tanzania by bus. We spent a full 4 days on Safari and another climbing stage one of Kilimanjaro. Both so worth it! Bring a camera, and binaculars. Listen to your guides and tip liberally! Drink lots of bottled water! We spent time in Dar es Salaam and Arusha as well was Bagamoyo. We did stop at places along the way, but do to exhaustion and the heat and the prospect of more bus riding i didnt pay attention. So in Dar es Salaam we had mostly business meetings. When we couldnt do any of it anymore we had a real ful free day! We spent it sunning enjoying the Indian Ocean and the water. |
| | Arusha Climb Kilimanjaro, at least the first stage. Bring extra water, you will have a guide. They dont let you climb without one. We had the joy of doing the day climb in about 2.5 hours and it hurt, but a good kind of i accomplished something hurt. If you have the energy and time climb the mountain. But be ready to get cold, wet, and anything else. It is a long way up!! Also if you are going to by Tanzanite, now is the time to do it! It is mined at near Arusha, get it from a legitiamate jewelry dealer and once again barter. You wont find it cheaper anywhere else. |
| | Bagamoya The city has a similar history to Zanzibar. There is a very cool medieval city known as the Kaole Ruins. There are wonderful Islamic buildings and tombs. There is also a well that has not changed water levels or become undrinkable despite the fact it isnt more then 150 yards from the ocean! It is believed to have healing powers, you can risk drinking it if you want- I wouldnt. However our guides all did and survived. We also went swimming at a resort down the road. It was nice I was amazed at how warm the Indian ocean is! It is like bathwater but with jellyfish and sea plants. The city eventually became a major exit point and the first Catholic church in East Africa is built there. Stanley Livingston's body ended up resting and there before its journey to England. There is a museum about the East African slave trade. It is a small but well put together museum with lots of information and a cool place to escape the afternoon heat. |
