Malawi An Amazing Country

by ChartIt - last update: Mar 25, 2007

Our time in Malawi

We may have been stuck at the border of Tanzania for a bit. They were going to have us pay an additional entrance tax of 10 dollars. Not bad, but still frustrating. YOU SHOULD ALWAYS HAVE AT LEAST 100 DOLLARS US. You have no idea how often you will need it to clear things. We were also eaten alive by bugs. We stopped using bug spray it didnt help. Anti-Malaria Medication is nessesary. DO NOT TAKE THE ONCE A WEEK PILL. We actually had someone get malaria that was on it. The people at our hotel were wonderful, the food was also good. If you have ever been to Chicago in Januray you can understand how wonderful being able to go swimming outside really is! Phone calls to the US were well priced, and they did take credit cards. Calling home from Africa isnt generally cheap but sometimes it is very much so worth it to hear from home!

Explore the Country

We spent a good deal of time exploring schools, visiting state officials and admittedly shopping! I do love to shop. The people are generally exceptionally welcoming. And it is very easy to get new friends. Enjoy the local foods, and culture. Like our stay in Kenya, always eat the fruit in the morning. Most of it is either freshly cut or you peal it. I never had a problem with their cut pineapple, or mangos. Stick to bottled water still. Dont camp out at night, if you do have a tent, particuarly in Lilongwe they have had heynnas maul, kill, and eat the unsuspecting sleeper who sleeps out of doors. It is amazing how much a deterent that little fabric is. If you encounter wildlife, dont touch it! If they come up to your tent, dont make a noise or attack it. Just be quiet and dont do anything.
