I have learned a lot about this city when I have been here, and above all I have found the people to be warm and welcoming. I will never forget the unbelievable kindness of a small group of elderly people I met at a church the day after i arrived and gave me plenty of advice on finding the basics to setting up my apartment. I kinda needed stuff to cook with, and eat on too.
The City has a good number local and specailty shops everything from coins to yarn.
There are plenty of regular farmers markets, and the open market is a wonderful way to enjoy fresh produce.
The city is still based on the medieval streets and walls They can be a bit confusing, but they are worth exploring
Only in York:
The streets are called Gates
The Gates are called Bars
The Bars are called pubs
The streets are called Gates, going back to a viking word for streets. The Vikings were very important at one point in York. The Jorvick Viking Center, is an intreasting tribute to it, as they kinda have a ride you ride on, and isnt quiet so strong as a museum.
The City Gates, are actually called Bars. There are some very cool ones. And will be discussed in comments and tips.
And as in the English traditions are focused on pubs.

The Brunch Wagon is AMAZING Kasia and Asia are great + Asia is the spitting image of Kirsten Dunst We go there every day + we never get tired of their knowing looks. Look out for Micheal, a kindly old fellow who roams the market daily
