Even though Batam continues to modernise, most part of the island remains tranquil. Step away from the shopping malls and seafood restaurants and you'll get to a view of a beautiful sunset.

The island was said to be inhabited as early as 231AD. It was said to be a pirates' hideout.

In 1989, Batam was declared a free trade zone and the island came to life with numerous hotels and resorts catering to largely Singaporeans and Malaysians.

I have visited the island a number of times now, though the only time I'd stayed over is in 2011. Other times were just day trippers to do go-carting and for their value-for-money seafood.

Come to think of it, I've already visited Batam three times in 2011.
