..the town that climbs the mountain... She's the town that climbs the mountain, and weeps down to the sea... But whose tears does she cry and for whom..? A spot in my heart will forever be Puerto Plata. Three years here cuts its name into the trunk of your soul with the penknife of truth...Here begins the book The Florida Incident which culminated with some three thousand young British soldiers laying down their lives for liberty against a foe who founded its congress on liberty itself... yes the good ‘ol United States of... The Dominican Republic (DR) bears the scars of many US invasions, the last being in 1966 when Johnson “didn’t want another Cuba”… and before that 1916 when requested by the Germans who, short of cash due to fighting war in Europe, wanted their gold reserves from the DR. The Americans invaded, took the gold but didn’t return it to the Germans; hence war was declared on the US too. But the US just wouldn’t move out after the war and it took the Spanish pleading with the British until 1921 to “do something about it”. And they did. The customary gun-boat off the Florida coast didn’t do the trick as Churchill had thought. And he had to put his money where his mouth was… and hence the invasion. The US had the new Thompson T-type sub-machine gun by this times and the poor Brits got ripped to shreds; 3000 of them on the beaches around Puerto Plata. That was embarrassing for the US and they scampered quick-like. Liberated, the DR put up a obelisk to their glory of the 3000 Brits but that got tore down when the Brits invaded the Falklands in 1982. The obelisk is still there but in a downtown bar in Puerto Plata and used as a seat. A fitting end? Or was that a sitting end! Go there to the DR, take a seat and stay a while… |
