Tower in Rhodos medieval town

Short introduction to history of Rhodes

Like many Mediterranean islands Rhodos is full of history. Since the island is so close to the continent, it has always been a target for ambitious warriors throughout the centuries. Difficult to believe but Rhodos became the Greek territory only half the century ago. Remarks of the fights can be seen all over the island and in the town of Rhodos, especially in the old medieval town, where still is 6000 people that live in the same buildings as the knights of St. John lived 6 centuries ago.
The cleariest sign of the strugle throughout the centuries can be seen in variety of religious places: the oldest synagogue in Greece, few mosques, a catholic church and of course greek orthodox church.
Of course, we can not put all the history of Rhodes here, we bought the book called "Rodos today and yesterday" which we found interesting and very detailed about Rhodes history.

Weather in Rhodes

The island of Rhodes enjoys about 300 sunny days a year which makes it very popular summer destination. We happened to be there in the end of August with average temperature of air and sea above 26 Celcium degrees. It means that you have to be ready to handle up to 36 Celcium degrees at the day time and around 25 degrees at night. But breeze coming from the Aegean sea and air conditioning systems makes the life a little bit easier.

Rhodes in our experience

We came to Rhodos with the only one purpose of relaxing, we could not have made a better choice. As most tourist places that receive more than 1,3 million tourists during the season. The true culture of the people has stepped aside for the culture of financial profiting. For us it was quite difficult to walk down the main streets where well trained and smooth talking "waiters-invitors" of local tavernas and restaurants were almost falling on their knees to convince us to eat and drink in their restaurants. After a little while we found out that it was better to walk in the middle of the streets instead of pavements :) that gave us secure distance from smooth talking invitors.
We also noticed very interesting Scandinavian cult in the island, most likely because perhaps about 50 percent of the visitors come from the Nordic countries. On many streets it is almost impossible to find a local greek taverna, it is all occupied by Danish, Finnish, Norwegian or Swedish bars. We even met many waiters of Scandinavian origin.
Rhodos is not a cheap destination, so if you are looking for a budget holiday, Rhodos is not the place to visit. Even though the medieval old town is very beautiful, the prices there are at least twice bigger than anywhere else in the town, so we recommend you to go through it with your own drink.
So our conclusion of Rhodes is that the island is charming in many ways but you do not visit this to learn about greek tradition and history but for relaxing as we did, we found this a good choice, even the main downside was the prices. We managed to spend 1000 euros in one week without actually doing anything except eating.

Pros:"Guaranteed good weather, beautiful sea, friendliness of locals"
Cons:"Prices, lack of greek culture."
In A Nutshell:"Expensive beautiful town"
