Wechiau Community Hippo Sanctuary

I vistited Wechiau in November 2002 as an Earthwatch volunteer. The visit had a huge impact on me and I have since been working to support the continued development of this community. The Wechiau Community Hippo Sanctuary is very different to other wildlife parks or sanctuaries that you will find around the world because it is truly controlled by the indegenous people. The different tribes in the area work together for conservation of the area and to protect the hippos. The development of the tourist trade is helping them to provide some of the things we in the developed world take for granted such as water and lights.
