Getting TO/AROUND: Walk or take the Metro. Don't even THINK about driving, unless you are certifiably insane. I think it's a requirement to obtain a driver's permit in Rome. The trick to crossing streets was given to me by a resident of Rome. She said to watch for an opening in traffic and then step out with authority. And the cars actually stop! But if you hesitate at all, the drivers will realize it and go roaring on by. I've tried this, and it really works. There's another suggestion that I read in Bill Bryson's 'Neither Here Nor There' -- he suggests that when crossing a street you attach yourself to a group of nuns because all traffic stops for them.
