Imagine spending a few days in Switzerland in late October. It's cold, gray, and rainy... then you take the overnight train to Venice. You wake up the next morning, walk out of the train station, and it's beautifully warm and sunny, and the Grand Canal is right in front of you. I thought I had discovered heaven on earth. All of the history, the color, the sunwashed buildings and the romance that is Venice hit me at once, and I fell permanently in love with this city. There are the horror stories -- overpriced, too crowded, frequent flooding -- but I never experienced the latter two and I didn't care about the first. Venice is one of my most perfect memories.
