This is one of those rare photos taken from inside the airplane that actually turns out well. I can't take credit for it -- my sister was the lucky photographer. The photo shows the very tip of Cotopaxi peeking above the clouds around Quito as we were preparing to land. At 19,000 feet above sea level, Cotopaxi is one of the highest active volcanoes in the world. And Quito, at about 10,000 feet, is the 2nd highest capital city in the world (after La Paz). Cotopaxi is not an inactive volcano, but we didn't experience any trouble on our trip. I've since heard that one of the other nearby volcanoes (Pichincha) was rumbling, so check it out before you go. |
