"Cassowary, endangered species.. Tully" Tully by tropicrd
Tully Travel Guide: 2 reviews and 9 photos
10klms south of Tully on the Bruce Highway we came across a beautiful adult Cassowary which is an endangered species..it was trying to cross the highway and we believe it was looking for food.
Most of their natural environment and food supplies were destroyed in the 2011 cyclone YASI.
We had just driven through Tully township and felt sad that so much had been destroyed when something caught my eye on the side of the road and could not believe what I was seeing.....it is very rare to see a Cassowary in this area as they are very shy birds and are usually found around Mission Beach areas and further into the rainforests.
My husband and I stopped and took some photoes and a short video and hopefully it went back into the forest..we were scared it would be run over by a car or truck on this busy highway. We ended up ringing the wildlife rescue and reported the sighting.
So if you are visiting this area slow down..you never know what you may come across .
This beautiful Cassowary was trying to cross the busy Bruce highway 10klms south of Tully Township. We stopped the car and until we thought it was safe..the traffic speeds along this stretch of road so we were scared it would be killed...You can see by the pic that the forest is sparse..it will come back in time but these rare birds are finding it tough to survive.
After a while it turned back into the sparse forest and hopefully to safety.
It would be so sad to lose another one of these creatures to speeding cars/trucks..it must have been very hungry for it to venture out this far from it's normal habitat.
- Pros:A beautiful area with lots to see and do.
- Cons:Speeding traffic along the Bruce Highway.
- In a nutshell:Look out for endangered Cassowaries around Tully
