Sentosa Monorail: Around Sentosa Island (now closed)
  • Tip Rating:
  • 'Mode': AROUND
    Category: Train
Getting TO/AROUND: The Sentosa Monorail is the chief way of transport of the island Sentosa in Singapore. This monorail was inaugurated in the year 1982. The Monorail Uses 14 cars which run in the unidirectional way on single loop covering important destinations of the island. The advantage of the monorail is that the tourists can avail the transport as many times they want while staying in Sentosa. There are seven stations covering the various parts of the island. Unfotunately it was closed since 2005 to pave way to the New Sentosa Express ( I should try that when I go Back to Singapore).

Getting TO/AROUND: This Ultra Modern Hub of Singapore was the former Largest Airport in Asia but is now Overtaken by the Modern Beijing Airport in Sheer Size. The Airport is located about 20km (13 miles) northeast of the Downtown Singapore. Besides being the Main Hub of Flag carrier Singapore Airlines, it is also the maind hubs of Singapore Airlines Cargo, SilkAir, Tiger Airways, Jetstar Asia Airways, Valuair, and Jett8 Airlines Cargo. It is a hub for Garuda Indonesia and a secondary hub for Qantas, which uses Singapore as the main stopover point for flights on the Kangaroo Route between Australia and Europe. Changi Airport currently has five terminals. Terminals 1, 2 and 3 are directly connected with a common transit area and has it's own budget air carrier Terminal for Budget Carriers. Inside the terminal are expansive areas for dining, duty free shopping, shops, spas and other modern conveniences.

Getting TO/AROUND: Singapore Airlines is one of the Great Airlines of the World and one of the keys of being A Great Airline unfortunately is being partly or heavily Subsidized by their national governments and Singapore Airlines is one such Airline (In Asia, only the Philippines don't give subsidies to its National Airline). Singapore Airlines was formerly Malayan Airways Limited and Started Operations in 1947 but in 1972, it split into Singapore Airlines and Malaysian Airlines. Obviously its hub is in Changi Airport and flies to 65 destinations in 35 countries on five continents. Singapore Airlines operates a wide-body aircraft fleet from four aircraft families: the Boeing 747, the Boeing 777, Airbus A380 and the Airbus A340 and also has a subsidiary, Silk Airlines, a budget regional carrier serving secondary routes.

Singapore MRT: Cheap Way to Go Around
  • Tip Rating:
  • Singapore Singapore MRT
  • at Dhoby Ghaut Station
  • by machomikemd
  • Send Photo to a Friend
  • 'Mode': AROUND
    Category: Train
Getting TO/AROUND: Like in Progressive Areas, Singapore has an efficient Mass Transport System which is a necessity since Singapore has a small area so that Singapore has prohibitive taxes on cars to discourage ownership. The Singpore MRT is the heart of the Mass Transport System. The MRT has 64 operating stations with 109.4 kilometres of lines and operates on standard gauge. Every station has at least four General Ticketing Machines (GTMs), a Passenger Service Centre, LED and plasma displays that show train service information and announcements. All stations are equipped with restrooms and payphones. If Hongkong MTR has an Octupus Magnetic Card Sytem, the Singapore MRT has the EZ Link card, it is a smart card that stores money values and can be used not only in the MRT but also the LRT & Bus system without the need for multiple cards, saving them both time & effort as they no longer need to figure out which card to use for which system. Fares range between SGD 0.90 (one station to the next) upwards - i.e. from Orchard Road to Changi Airport is SGD 1.70. You can buy an EZ Link Card at any MRT station for S$15. This includes a S$3 deposit which is refunded when you return the card. There is a non-refundable amount of S$5 for the card cost and a travel value of S$7 to start with. The minimum top-up is S$10. Any unused value is refundable as well.

Tap the EZ Link card in the designated area on the top of the turnstile to enter the train area and likewise tap the card on the turnstile at your destination to exit. Same for buses - when entering the bus tap the card on the specially designed card reader near the driver and at the rear door when exiting.
