Wat chai Wattanaram 1

When in Ayuthaya, This Wat is one of the Major Stopovers of any tours. One Unusual Design here is the Wat has a Cambodian Style tower which was speculated to honor the victory of thailand over the Khmer Empire in the 16th century (remember that during the Angkor Empire in the 8th to 13th centuries, Thailand was just a vassal state of the Angkor Khmer). The wat was built by King Prassatthong in 1630 A.D and it consists of a main prang (Khmer-type tower) and four lesser prangs and a gallery of about 120 buddhas. Wat Chaiwatthanaram was a royal chapel like the Wat Phra Si Sanpet hence it has no monks. It was a wat where the King and his descendants would perform religious rities, thus renovation would have been continuous. It was also used as a cremation site for princes, princess, and other members of the royal family.

the entrance is free and is open everday
