The origins of this Tuscan city are lost in the mists of time, but as the main port between Genoa and Ostia it was an important Roman settlement. Pisa reached its aenith as a maritime power in the 11th Century.
It was loot from supporting the Norman crusade to evict Saracens from Sicily that provided funds to begin construction of one of Italy's finest monuments, the walled 'Campo de Miricali'. This is inevitably a UNESCO world heritage site, and one of the best.
After being conquered by Naples, Pisa went into decline, the population much the same now as it was in the Middle Ages helping to preserve Pisa's romantic Medieval character. |
