Venice is one big tourist trap! Has been since the 18th century. Food is expensive. Hotels are expensive or shoddy unless you choose very wisely.
But once again. It's all worth it and it just depends on how you do it!
In Venice, even the ads are artistic mosaics!

At Least Do This: Here is the golden advice. Listen carefully.
1) Avoid Venice in Summer. It's crowded, hot, and sometimes smelly. My favorite trip was during a christmas cold spell!
2)Get a decent hotel tip and don't just wing it if possible.
3)Stay off the beaten path. Preferably not in the cheap hotels near the train station.
4)Relax, wander and don't be over ambitious.
Alternative: Go to Venice in the fall, or spring. Winter is cold, but is my favorite time. Avoid the crowds as much as possible by staying in off the beaten path connection Piazzale Roma (Train Station too) with San Marco.
