Leiria is an old town, but didn't grown much.

The castle
Leiria's Castle is in fact very old. There some fortifications in the place at the Romans time, then it was built as a castle by the islamics, and at the XII century, the area was concquered by D. Afonso Henriques.
Two centuries another ruler, D. Dinis, has chosen this place for his court, so he rebuilt the castle adding the palace site (which is visible from the city)
