the gateway of india was built to commemorate the visit of king george V and gueen mary to bombay, prior to the darbar in delhi in december 1911. construction was completed in december 1924. the adjacent taj mahal palace and taj intercontinental hotels are a major landmark and a popular tourist attraction. the gateway is one of the most visited monuments in bombay.

caves

elepfanta caves are the focal point of the elephanta island, located in the mumbai harbour off the coast of mumbai. in 1987 the caves were designated a unesco world heritage site. it is visited my many domestic and foreign tourists. the site of these magnificent caves contained beautiful reliefs, sculptures, and a temple to the hindu god siva. the caves are hewn from solid rock.

marine drive is a 3 km long boulevard in south mumbai. the highlight of marine drive is the beautiful promenade along the road where many of the citizens take in a breath of fresh air and view the daily sunsets. the promenade is lined with palm trees. at the northern end of marine drive is chowpatty beach.
