Table Mountain view from Robben eiland
Cape Town is most of all famous for the breathtaking landmark, Table Mountainits, as well as its harbour and surrounding beaches.

Jan van Riebeeck first set foot on Cape soil in April 1652 to establish the firs permanent European settlement in South Africa. The original purpose of the Cape was to serve as a victualling station for Dutch ships on route to Eastern Africa, India, and the Far East. This original purpose was quickly outgrown and Cape Town was the largest city in the South Africa until the growth of Johannesburg and Durban. Today Cape Town has a land area larger than other South African cities, resulting in a comparatively lower population density.
