| | Amsterdam - The Weekend City One would think that Amsterdam is a fun city to live in due to the freedom to soft drugs and the well established Red Light District (RLD). However, I'm not into weed or any other form or drugs. I like the idea that the government has done really well in keeping the country clean, safe and fun.
I must say that Amsterdam is truly a weekend city. It's small and you'll get around it by the end of the weekend. Plus, you'll end up seeing most things that you want to see. However, if you're into museums, then you would need one day for each museum.
The best way to view Amsterdam is to ride around with the 'Oma's Bike', which literally means Grandmother's Bicycle. You'll learn the roads and the way the locals live. Plus, you set your own pace and enjoy the surroundings.
A visit to the RLD is a must for those interested in weed or to view the ladies in those glass windows. If you don't dare to venture with the girls, then you should definitely attend the 'shows, museums live performances.' It truly is a fantastic experience. Every scenery in Amsterdam is beautiful from the buildings to the canals to the people as well. They're well versed in English, so it shouldn't be a problem to communicate. |
| | Places Of Interest The number one priority and on top of everyone's list is definitely the Red Light District. It's not exactly a bad thing to have the thought of visiting the place as it's interesting enough and I must say that it's one of the best places to go to for food, as the Chinatown is located within the area. Another spot is the Bloemen Markt (Flower Market).
A place that I would recommend visitors to Amsterdam to go to is the Heineken Factory / Museum. You only have to pay Euro10 and you'll get 3 beers, free glass, and an insight to beer making and history. A fascinating place indeed.
The morning flea market is worth to go to as well. There is one in Jordan, Waterloo (For used rare books, 1st editions, paintings and others), Spur and a few others which I can't remember the names as for now. The Albert Cuyp market is also a famous one. It's a morning market that sells fish, vege and meat but it has one of the best herring stall there. Totally fresh. You can find some cheap things there, if you fancy it.
As for museums, there's Anne Frank, Rijks, Van Gogh and War Museum. That's as far as I can think of at the moment. In my opinion, Rijks and Anne Frank is the 2 best ones and should be in your top priority before the others if you have little time to spend in Amsterdam. |
