Window to Sierra Negra | Sierra Negra and Pico de Orizaba from Atzizintla |
We tried to find out how to climb Sierra Negra and came across Ciudad Serdán. Its the best place to stay in the area, with a few very economical hotels. In the city, there are two second class bus stations, beautiful churches, and markets, all at the foot of Sierra Negra. |

| | Getting to Sierra Negra If you are interested in climbing Sierra Negra, its pretty simple. Just take a bus to Ciudad Serdán. From Ciudad Serdán, you can take another bus to Atzizintla, and that bus will drop you off on the highway. From there, you can either walk 10 km or take the next bus ("combi") into the town for 4 pesos. In the town, Atzizintla, find a taxi and take it up the hill to the Pueblito of Texmalaquila. At the edge of the pueblo, you can ask to hire a guide to take you up the mountain. Don't try to venture up by yourself without getting permission from one of the locals. Before you start your hike, try to negotiate a price with one of the families for a meal and/or a place to stay if you want- they're more than willing to accomodate you. |
Staying in Serdán If you decide to stay in Ciudad Serdán- you can get a room with three beds one block from the zocalo for 450 pesos, or 45 USD. Definetly, have the local breakfast of giant tamales for 4 pesos each. This is a small town but has a great local market. There are several second class bus companies out of Serdán when you are ready to depart. A couple of popular ones are "AU" and "FAG." | | | Our hotel in Ciudad Serdán (Nice place) |
