I was born in 1987 at the local IHS SouthEast Alaska Regional Health Consortium-Mt. Edgecumbe Hospital. Even though I'm only 20 years old, I like to see how the town has changed over the few short years since I was born.
Sitka is the perfect place to visit during the summer. It's quiet. The town is the perfect place for adventureous tourists who are looking for the perfect wilderness trail, or that 50 pound king salmon.
The night life is perfect for that one person who wants to sit and talk with one of the locals over a beer, or party at one of the local homes.
You'll truely be lucky, though, if the weather is great while you visit.
With the exception of 2006, Sitka had seen 2 straight years of warm and dry summers. In some cases, we saw temperatures in the middle to upper 80s.
Because of its location, Sitka is only the 3rd busiest port in Southeast Alaska (after Ketchikan, Juneau, and Skagway).
Tourism has also allowed many stores in town to slowly start expanding their services and remodel their stores. There are still a few stores that have siding dated before the 1990s.
Unfortunately, tourism has become an issue for this town. It's sitting at a crossroads. It's torn between expanding and developing their tourism industry, or further regulating and decreasing the capacity the town can accomodate.
- Pros:Wilderness, remoteness, atmosphere...
- Cons:Locals, busy tourist days, weather.
- In a nutshell:Paris of the Pacific
