Half hour from NYC, off exit 14 on the turnpike south you will find Newark... for the traveller it might be the first sight in the US if Newark Liberty Airport is their arrival destination... From the pike take Raymond Blvd and follow directions to downtown Newark, soon you will see the signs for the Ironbound Section. Parking is tough in this area, so plan to park away from the center, or in side streets off Ferry Street, the main drag... You can also take a train into Penn Station, located on Market and Raymond Plaza, east of Ferry St.
A stroll down Ferry Street will make your mouth water by the delicious smells coming from the many restaurants and bakeries that this street has! There is also all kinds of shops that offer European wear and gear, mainly from Spain and Portugal. For example, you can find good quality children wear for a special occassion such a wedding in the small clothing stores located here; you can also find ethnic cooking utensils such as clay pan for making Paella here, along with ceramic serving dishes which are both beautiful and practical.
There are many stores that sell fresh fruit and vegetables as well as fresh fish and seafood... I travel to Newark just to buy fish and bread!
The street is very busy with both pedestrians and automobiles so you have no choice but to slow down and enjoy the surroundings. It is not unusual, weather permitting to see a bunch of "old-timers" grouped together outside on the sidewalk watching a soccer game from a TV screen in the window of an electronic store. Very Amusing! Or hear the lastest music hits from the latin world coming from the music stores... It is a street that definitely engages your senses!
- Pros:Good Food, Good times
- Cons:Crowded, not enough parking
- In a nutshell:It Awakens your Senses!

Congratulations, you may be the first person ever to visit Newark as a tourist! (haha) I agree that rodizio is one of the best things that the city has to offer. Also, Newark is the home of the Italian hot dog. Best from Central NJ, Bill
Good stuff. Congratulations.
