Train bridge through the 'Rockies'

Rocky Mountaineer

In 2004 I went on the train "The Rocky Mountaineer" which runs from Vancouver, BC up through the Rocky Mountains of Canada to Jasper, Alberta. The scernery is spectacular throughout the journey. One of the most interesting parts is where the train actually goes into a figure eight pattern through the mountains. The track was constructed this way because the grade was so steep and many trains had careered off the tracks in the early 1900's. The trip takes the most of two days with a stop over in Kamloops overnight. The service on the train is excellent with the steward providing the meals and drinks and a running commentary along the way. And if you are lucky you will see a bear or deer feeding near the tracks.
One of the main streets in Jasper

Jasper, Canada

Jasper is neat little hamlet nestled in the rocky mountains which is where the train journey ended. This is a great place to make for a base and to venture out for a number of days. There is a lot of wild life throughout this whole area. The locals tell us that it is not uncommon to see moose in the main street in the off season. Sometimes bears scavange into town looking for food, thats why all litter-bins made are bear proof.
Lake Maligne

Lake Maligne

One of the best drives to take from Jasper is out to Lake Maligne, which is about 40 km southeast of Jasper. Keep a look out for lots of deer grazing by the road on the way. This is one of the most photographed places in Alberta, Canada. Everytime you see a calender of Canada, there will be a picture of Spirit Island on Lake Maligne on it. You need to catch a cruise to go out there, but it is worth it if you want to take great pics.
