Elia Beach - Mykonos

Elia Beach

Elia Beach Elia Beach Review

If it's water-skiing, para-sailing, windsurfing or boating that you like, then Elia Beach is the place for you. This is a lovely long sandy beach on the South Coast of Mykonos and there are plenty of tavernas to drop into for a cool drink and a bite to eat when you have finished. If you just want to relax in the sun, you can do that too as there are umbrellas and sun lounges provided and not as many people as at some of the other beaches.

Address: Southern Central part of Mykonos.

Directions: 13 Kms South of Mykonos.

Nightly performance....... - Mykonos

Nightly performance.......

Pelican Pete Little Venice Quater Review

In 1954 after a particuarly severe storm, Petros the pelican decided to give up travelling and settle on Mykonos permanently. He wandered around the port town of Hora for the next thirty years delighting both the locals and the visitors alike.
After his death, the locals decided to keep the tradition going and so found a replacement. Today there are more than one of these beautiful birds roaming the streets of Hora but sadly, their wings have been clipped to keep them there. They are very well cared for and loved, however, and seem to be quite at home whether resting in an alleyway or doing their party tricks for the visitors at various spots arond the town. They are in no way camera shy.
You can usually see one at night in the doorway of the little cafe near the taxi stand in the main square. His carer will be close by.

Address: Hora, Mykonos.

The Windmills of Mykonos - Mykonos

The Windmills of Mykonos

Windmills Wind Mills Review

Probably the most recognisable feature of Mykonos (next to everything being painted white) would be the windmills. Originally 16 in number, they were used to grind the agricultural harvests by harnessing the famous Mykonos wind for power. The five that overlook Mykonos Town (Hora or Chora) are probably the most famous. And just like the Matterhorn in Zermatt and the Eiffel Tower in Paris, wherever you go in Mykonos Town, they can be seen.

The Town of Hora (Mykonos Town) - Mykonos
The Town of Hora (Mykonos Town) Town of Hora Review

This is the most amazing place, it almost defies description. A maze of little alleyways lined with boutiques, jewellers, souvenir shops, cafes etc.etc.etc. There is fascination at every turn. I couldn't believe it and nor will you when you go. You will definitely get lost, but don't panic, just keep walking and turning corners and eventually you will find yourself in a familiar spot.

White Churches White Churches Review

Depending on where you do your research you will get varying tallies for the numbers of little white churches on Mykonos. I've found numbers ranging from 250 to 365. Why so many? You may well ask.
The majority of the little white churches are privately owned and you will see them everywhere. They are built by families to commemorate the lives of departed loved ones. Sometimes you may see two or more churches in a private backyard. And I guess many families don't have any because they simply can't afford them.
These little buildings however are an integral feature of the island.

Church of Panagia Tourliani.... - Mykonos

Church of Panagia Tourliani....

Ano Mera Ano Mera Review

The next most significant village after Hora on Mykonos is Ano Mera. Don't blink, you'll miss it! It lies about 9 kms from Hora and is home to the lovely Monastery and Church of Panagia Tourliani. Ano Mera also sports an interesting lttle town square with an array of restaurants and other assorted eateries. We were there on a Friday morning and there seemed little sign of life other than at the Monastery. Do drop in to see the church it is quite lovely.
Ano Mera is often described as a peaceful little town and from what we saw, indeed it is.

Address: Central part of Mykonos.

Inside the Catholic Church..... - Mykonos

Inside the Catholic Church.....

Catholic Church...

The little Catholic Church is situated right in the heart of Hora among the shops and restaurants. It is a tinly little chapel really, but quite lovely anyway. For Catholics visiting Mykonos and wanting to go to Sunday Mass, there is a Mass at 7.00pm on Sunday night. It may be best to check however, because it could change at different times of the year. I couldn't be sure.
The priest ascertains how many people are present speaking which language and then says Mass in the most popular language of the congregation. The readings and the homily, however are spoken in Greek.

View from the hill..... - Mykonos

View from the hill.....

Kalafatis Beach....

Kalafatis Beach is where you go if you are right into water sports big time. It boasts its own wind surfing centre and is also the place for jet-skiing and scuba diving.
It is situated not more than a few minutes drive from Ano Mera.
I particularly liked the building high on the hill overlooking the beach. I'm afraid I wasn't able to identify what it was (if anything) but the crosses and bells had me intrigued.

Directions: Not far on from Ano Mera. Just follow the signs.

Church of Panagia Paraportiani.... - Mykonos

Church of Panagia Paraportiani....

Church of Panagia Paraportiani.... Church of Panagia Paraportiani Review

On the western side of the port town of Hora, before you get to Little Venice you will find the imposing Paraportiani. It stands in the area known as "Kastro" or castle area and it is the oldest section of the town.
Paraportiani evolved over about two hundred years beginning in 1475. Four little churches were joined together to form the lower or main area of the church and a fifth church was placed on top to form the dome that we see today.
In medieval times, the Kastro area was surrounded by a stone wall and Paraportiani which loosely translated, means inner door, was just that in terms of entry to the area past the wall.
Today it presents a formidable sight from its perch on the higher ground of the town and like the windmills, it can be seen from miles around.
