Bit of a worry

The train trip from Munich to Prague was just fine until the train stopped at a small station in the middle of nowhere and we were all offloaded with no idea of where we were to go or which train we were to get on or most importantly why we had been offloaded in the first place. This made for a very difficult situation as there were over 200 people left stranded and only a small handful spoke Czech. In any event we decided to follow the crowd and hope for the best and eventually we made it to Prague.
As we had no idea where our hotel was situated we opted for a cab and were taken for the proverbial "ride". 31 Euros for a four minute ride!
Apparently you must ascertain before you ever get into a cab what the fare will be as they wait till they have packed all your luggage in and you are in with seatbelt fastened before they tell you what the fare is. Our situation was made worse because the change in trains along the way meant our train arrived at a different station to the one that we were originally supposed to come in at, so this left us disoriented and not knowing where the hotel was and hence at the mercy of the unscrupulous cab driver. When we left the hotel to continue our journey two days later, the hotel staff ordered a cab for us with a pre-arranged price which was half of what we paid on the first day and as we were leaving from the correct station it meant that the distance in the cab was a lot further than it had been when we arrived.

Exploring

Prague is indeed a very beautiful and historic city which we thoroughly enjoyed exploring but for some reason I can't exactly put my finger on, I found I did not warm to it. For the most part it was quite dirty and unless we were right in the middle of the historical places (which were fabulous) it seemed to lack ambience or atmosphere. I know that a lot of people would disagree with me, but funnily enough, I have also found plenty of people who feel the same way I do. Overall, it was quite an economical place to visit which made a nice change, but perhaps I found the language barrier too great when compared to the German speaking countries or to France or Italy where it's easy to get by on a few words of the local lingo.

I wouldn't discourage anyone from visiting Prague especially if you enjoy history and I certainly don't regret going myself. It just wasn't my favourite destination.

We did what you said and took the funicular to Petrin Tower, then walked down hill. Wouldn't want to do it the other way. Thanks for the info!

Yes it was impressive enough. It's a popular area with other things to see and do close by.

I haven't been to Prague for over forty years now, but I'm hoping to give it another try next month. My last visit was in November and it was grey and cold; I hope April will be better.

Interesting Prague page - I was ripped off there myself, also in a cab from the station to our hotel. Will never ride a cab again in Prague.

Know how you felt arriving at a different station, happened to me in Vietnam. Nobody spoke English, No taxis, No help, so just started walking hoping for the best. Horrible experience.

Excellent! Thanks for the www.citycrown.cz link. I'm sort of attracted by the array of fantastic pastries :-)
