At first sight........

Back in September 2005, I had my first sight of Venice....wow! what can I say? It was a short stay of one night and we stayed in Mestre, but we packed quite a lot into two visits on to the island. But as has happened so many times since my first European visit, I just had to put Venice on my list of places I needed to revisit as soon as I could.

Back again as promised......June, 2007

From Genoa, Billy and I travelled by train via Milan and Verona to Austria but returned to Italy ten days later by way of Venice.
Billy fell in love with Venice in a minute and I was just glad to get back there as my first trip had been very hurried and I wanted to see more. We struck gold when two Scottish travellers who were leaving early one morning gave us their Venice Cards which had a full days credit still on them, so we happily travelled the Vaporettos for free and of course that made everything look even better. Took a ride over to the Lido and enjoyed a lazy stroll around the town - the ice cream was great as it was a really hot day. The Dogue's Palace of course, was a highlight for Billy and I was happy to return there once more. Such a fascinating history has Venice and so much of it is recounted within the walls of the Palace. Billy particularly liked the dungeons and the Bridge of Sighs as he is what is known as a "bridge freak". As far as he was concerned, Europe was one long bridgefest.

Time to really enjoy it.......

I think I have read probably dozens of comments by VT members who say that Venice is a great city to walk around and to get get lost in. This is so true. It is out on its own for wandering, mainly I think, because it has so many tiny little alleyways and canals and of course you feel you need to cross as many of its hundreds of bridges, both large and small, as you can. It's just like running around in a maze. And getting lost is all part of the charm of Venice. Billy and I happily lost ourselves in those streets, alleys and canals for two wonderful days and then it was back on the train and a quick lunch and Leaning Tower stop in Pisa and we were ready to make our triumphant re-entry into the Eternal City.

Pros and Cons
  • Pros:It's such a different way of life
  • Cons:A bit expensive in places
  • In a nutshell:Can't wait till next time.
