A lovely afternoon

A half hour from Strasbourg by train will bring you to Colmar in the Alsace region of France. What a lovely way to spend an afternoon. I walked from Gare du Colmar to the City Centre and was glad I did as it gave me the opportunity to walk the full length of the Place Rapp with its fountains, flowers and beautiful Carousel.

The streets are never ending......

Once I reached the City Centre, I was truly amazed. I knew that I would find some very attractive half timbered houses but I had no idea that there would be so many of them. The little streets, lanes and alleyways seemed endless. Sadly most of these lovely buildings were in dire need of a coat of paint and some urgent maintenance. I hope it will be done soon as it would be an awful shame to see this beautiful town become tired and runddown.

Plenty to do to fill up an afternoon......

Colmar is an easy place to walk around and especially at a leisurely pace. There are squillions of eateries of all kinds and lots of interesting little shops etc. The cathedral is worth a look and can't be missed as it is right in the middle of the half timber houses and buildings.

Pros and Cons
  • Pros:Easy to walk around as it is very flat.
  • Cons:Many of the buildings in bad need of repair.
  • In a nutshell:A very appealing town.

:-) I should also plan Colmar for one of my spring weekend trips. It certainly looks cute! And ... Flammkuechele!

Colours of Colmar - what a fitting title. Some of the old houses are so beautifully decorated, and then others, as you say, badly need to be repaired. That's a very good tip about the 50cts coin.

This Town has been on my wish list for yonks! Hope to get there one day. I just love those timbered houses, and the Carousel, what memories that brings back! Used to be a lovely one at Glenelg in Sth Aus. Good page.
