Most tourists do the southern part of Kerala, from Kochi and down to Kovalam (I did too the first time I went). But going north is worth a try.
The Kannur area has less people, few tourists, beautiful beaches and it is the place to go for theyyam.
The population in northern Kerala is mainly muslim and they can be offended by the typical european almost-no-clothes-on-the-beach thing, but as far as we were concerned we didn't see anybody else on the beach at all so it wasn't really a problem :-)
Indian people are in general very helpful and interested. However, travelling with a little kid took this to a whole new dimension. If you take your precautions regarding food, water, sun etc. they can have a great time too!
At Costa Malabari the waiter and the cook volunteered in taking turns entertaining Mikkel while we were eating :-)
