Goliad is a nice little town to visit. It has a lot of things to see and do. There is the historic Presidio la Bahia, the site of the infamous Palm Sunday Goliad Massacre, where more men died in the battle for Texas Independence from Mexico, than died at the Alamo, hence the battle cry, "Remember Goliad,Remember the Alamo". There is the Mission located at the state park there. There are several ruins of other missions. There is Pioneer Park downtown, which is quite unique. There is the courthouse, which is absolutely beautiful! There are other unique things about Goliad which make it worth visiting too. Such as trees growing in the middle of the roads. Their Market Days on the courthouse square is a lot of fun. During the summer they have free movies shown on the side of a building in the courthouse square too. Bring your own food, drinks, chairs, and blankets, and enjoy an open air theater! All in all, it has a lot to offer the tourist, especially if you are a history buff.
There are only two motels in Goliad. I would not recomend either of them if you are staying more than a night or two. Goliad State Park offers nice camping, or camper sites in beautiful surroundings. Other than that --- If you are going to be staying for a week or more, you can check in at Goliad Tool Rental, located right on Hwy 59, and see if they have any of their weekly apartments available. If no one is at the Tool Rental, check next door at the tire store. These apartments are fair. They are reasonable. And they are set up for four people. They come with 4 single beds, 4 towels, 4 washrags, 4 plates, 4 cups, 4 glasses, etc. They sure beat a motel room!
Downtown Goliad boast a down-home, relaxed atmosphere. Courthouse Square is lined with historic, well preserved buildings. The sidewalks are lined with benches and rocking chairs, begging the passerby to stop for a bit and just enjoy the quiet picturesqueness of the downtown area.
