Chinese and Portuguese All the pictures shown in this album were taken in 1992. After living in Canada for a few years I decided in 1991 to move to Macau. Canada is now history and I absolutely do not intend returning to such a boring place (this comment does not apply to the province of Quebec, especially to the city of Montreal). As to Quebec City it is such a fascinating place, where the French culture, much closer to mine, is everywhere. Macau is a fascinating place combining two distinct cultures, the Chinese and the Portuguese. We have been harmoniously living together and tolerated each other for 500 years. (The Anglo-Saxon culture entered Macau a couple of years ago by building a few more mega casinos. I just hope they will be able to respect the Chinese and the Portuguese characteristics of the city and contribute to Macau's prosperity.) Macau is a city full of life and color and where nobody ever gets bored. Feel hungry at 3 o'clock in the morning? Well, no problem, let's cross the street and have some noodles. |

Besides its culture and delicious food, what I also like in Macau is its trees. In fact, Macau has some of the oldest and most beautiful trees in the world. If you have got any interest in compiling a book or encyclopedia about trees, well, Macau is a good place to start with. |
It is said that when the Portuguese first came in the XVI century they landed at Ah-Ma temple. They then asked the locals what place was that and the locals answered the place was called Ah-Ma. The Portuguese naturally couldn't understand Chinese, so when they heard the name of Ah-Ma they misspelled it, thus misleading everyone and pronouncing Macau instead of Ah-Ma. |
