The Drakensberg range stretch for about 1000km from the Eastern Cape to the Northern Province. The biggest part of this mountain range is in Kwazulu-Natal. A large part of the range is part of the uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park, a World Heritage site. The highest peaks are between 3000-3400 m above sea level. Some of the peaks include:
Champagne Castle (3376)
Giants Castle (3313)
Cathkin Peak (3182)
Cathedral Peak (3004)
There are many different areas worth visiting. I have been to the Central Berg three times now, and once to the Mont-Aux-Sources part.
The Central Berg area is very accessible, beautiful with a lot to see and do. It is an about 4h30 min drive from Pretoria. (See transportation trip)
It is a spectacular part of the mountains with some of the highest peaks (Cathkin, Champaign Castle and Cathedral) in this area.
There is a variety of thing to do here.
Just to be in the area is great, even if you don't do much.
But, there are many things to do, like horseback riding, helicopter trips into the mountainous area, visit and buy local crafts, the Drakensberg Boys Choir, hiking, etc
- Pros:Plenty
- Cons:None I can think of
- In a nutshell:A great escape from city life, with lots to do

great page mate. i plabn to visit south africa next year during the world cup.
The Drakensberg really is awesome- We did the helicopter trip, the pilot made me scream as he did a "Drop" as we came over the mountain - deliberately...I did not find it funny!!
Interesting tips and pictures Pierre. I was in the Northern Drakensberg at the Cavern Resort for two days last December. You are right in that it is very beautiful and well worth a visit.
The Drak has a lot of interesting areas like what you have shown that allow one to see a lot in a short amount of time.
This sounds like a nice weekend trip! Thokozisa must be a very interesting place - picturesque houses and mural. Lovely Zulu houses as well :)
